Why do power cuts happen in India? 9 real causes (2026)

From evening peak demand to transformer overload and storm damage — the 9 reasons power cuts happen in India, and what each one means for how long your outage will last.

AVAnanya Verma·Certified Electrical Engineer

Quick answer

  • Most Indian power cuts are local (a feeder or transformer), not national grid failures.
  • The evening peak (roughly 6–10 PM) is when demand-driven cuts are most likely.
  • Planned maintenance cuts are announced in advance; weather and fault cuts are not.

Why does the power go out in my area?

Power cuts in India almost always start locally, not at the national grid. Your street is served by a distribution feeder and a distribution transformer, and when one of those trips, overheats or fails, everyone downstream loses supply even though the rest of the city stays lit. That is why your area can be dark while a neighbour two kilometres away has power.

The nine most common causes, in rough order of how often households experience them: evening peak demand overload, distribution transformer failure, feeder trips and faults, scheduled maintenance, weather damage (storms, rain, falling branches), infrastructure upgrades, electricity theft triggering protective trips, fuel or generation shortage events, and accidents such as cables dug up during roadwork.

Why do cuts happen mostly in the evening?

Indian electricity demand peaks in the evening — roughly 6 PM to 10 PM — when homes switch on lights, fans, TVs, geysers and cooking appliances at the same time. Distribution transformers and feeders are sized for expected load; when a locality grows faster than its infrastructure, the evening peak pushes equipment past its rated capacity and protection devices trip.

This is also why a cut at 7 PM often returns within an hour (load is rebalanced), while a cut caused by a burned transformer can take many hours or a day to repair. Tracking when outages happen in your PIN code — as the trend charts on this site do — usually reveals a repeating evening pattern.

What is the difference between a planned and an unplanned cut?

A planned cut is scheduled maintenance or upgrade work: your DISCOM announces it in advance on its website, app or local notice, and it usually happens at a fixed time for one to a few hours. An unplanned cut is a fault — a tripped feeder, a failed transformer, a snapped conductor after a storm.

You can tell them apart in practice: a planned cut affects a defined set of streets at an announced time, while a fault cut is sudden. If your power returns and fails repeatedly in short cycles, that usually indicates load rebalancing after a fault, not maintenance.

Do power cuts mean India does not generate enough electricity?

Rarely at the national level. India now generates well over 200 GW at peak on normal days and maintains reserves; nationwide blackouts are extremely rare events. Most cuts you experience are distribution-level problems — the “last mile” of wires, transformers and feeders in your own locality — where capacity, maintenance and load growth actually determine reliability.

That is why two areas in the same city can have completely different outage patterns, and why a crowd-sourced PIN-code map is more useful for households than a national supply statistic.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a power cut every day at the same time in my area?

A cut that repeats at a fixed time every day is usually evening peak overload or scheduled load management on your feeder. Check your DISCOM’s app or notice board for a load-shedding schedule; if none is published, report the pattern to the 1912 helpline with dates and times.

How long does a typical power cut last in India?

Demand-related cuts often last under an hour because operators rebalance load. Equipment faults take longer: a feeder trip may take 30 minutes to a few hours, while a failed distribution transformer can take several hours to a day depending on the DISCOM’s crew availability.

Can a power cut damage my appliances?

The cut itself does not, but the moment of return can: voltage can briefly surge or dip when supply is restored. Switch off heavy appliances (AC, pump, geyser) during an outage and switch them on one at a time after power returns.
